In the middle of Hollywood, while actors are trying to make it to the big screen, real cowboys, cowgirls and horses are alive at Sunset Ranch Hollywood. Sunset Ranch, has been at its current location since 1954. Jute Smith is the original owner of the Sunset Ranch. Jute Smith was born in December of 1909 and raised in Los Angeles, CA. He was one of the original members to the Professional Rodeo Association, PRA. In 1929, he bought a few acres of land in Culver City, right off of Slauson Avenue, to start the original Sunset Ranch. The Ranch was home to rodeo shows, a quarter horse race track, wild west shows, hay rides and barn dances.

In 1954 developers were pushing Jute out of his Culver City location. He found a piece of land already horse occupied in

a little canyon at the top of Beachwood Drive. The stable was originally intended for the wealthy inhabitants of the Hollywoodland subdivision. When the depression hit at the wrong time for the development, the stable was quiet for many years. Jute took over the stable from Bertha Mann in 1952, leased it out for two years and began running it in 1954. In 1970, his son, Steve Smith took over the ranch to turn it into a thriving business. In 1995, current owner, Stephen Smith Jr., took over for his father. He is one of those real cowboys. He rode his first Bronc at the ranch at age 11 and hasn't turned back. Following in his family's footsteps, he is a Team Roping Champion and has achieved top status in Bare-Back Bronc Riding.

Sunset Ranch has stood the test of time, and the original 1920's barn remains. It is still home to the starlets learning to ride for their big gig and folks just looking to see the amazing views of Los Angeles on horseback.
